On April 24, 2025, the “Walking Together on the Path of Medicine” Oncology Seminar, jointly hosted by Jiangsu Province Hospital (also known as the First Affiliated Hospital with Nanjing Medical University, and Jiangsu Women and Children Health Hospital) and the Jiangsu Integrative Medicine Research Society, was grandly held in Nanjing by the First Affiliated Hospital with Nanjing Medical University and the Indonesian Society of Hematology and Medical Oncology (ISHMO). At a time when global cancer prevention and treatment are accelerating toward precision medicine and cross-regional collaboration, this seminar embodies the shared vision of China and Indonesia to improve public well-being. Through exchanges and cooperation in precision diagnosis and treatment technologies, it seeks to elevate standards of cancer diagnosis and treatment and deliver better outcomes for patients.

With the theme “Empowering Precision Diagnosis and Treatment, Achieving Win-Win Regional Collaboration,” this seminar focused on innovation in cancer diagnosis and treatment technologies and sustainable healthcare system development, building a platform for integrating international academic exchange with clinical practice. Professor Ding Qiang, Party Secretary of Jiangsu Province Hospital, chaired the seminar, with Professor Gu Yanhong, Director of the Department of Oncology, serving as executive chair. During the seminar, both sides shared the technological expertise and clinical experience of the First Affiliated Hospital with Nanjing Medical University in the field of oncology through diverse and practical formats, including thematic academic lectures, case discussions, and on-site clinical observations. Orientaltrans provided professional medical interpretation support throughout the one-and-a-half-day exchange event.

Professor Gu Yanhong presided over the opening ceremony and introduced how the seminar would help both sides elevate their cancer diagnosis and treatment capabilities to a new level through thematic lectures, case discussions, and clinical observations. This is a three-year project. The first year will focus on field visits and academic exchanges, while the subsequent two years will deepen both online and offline cooperation to promote mutual advancement in cancer diagnosis and treatment technologies and concepts.

During the academic exchange session, several experts delivered in-depth academic lectures. Professor Yin Yongmei elaborated on how China has made practical breakthroughs in breast cancer clinical trials, tracing the journey from local innovation to global influence. Professor Gu Yanhong shared the latest advances in colorectal cancer treatment in China, including the newest domestic and international clinical research findings and their guiding significance for clinical practice. Several experts conducted in-depth discussions on advances in the treatment of tumors such as non-small cell lung cancer and gastric cancer.

In addition to academic exchanges, the seminar also included field visit sessions. Experts and scholars from ISHMO visited the Lung Cancer MDT Clinic, Oncology Rehabilitation MDT Clinic, Oncology Laboratory, Hyperthermia Treatment Room, Clinical Research Ward, PET/CT Room, Yttrium-90 project, and CAR T-cell project at Jiangsu Province Hospital. Both sides engaged in lively discussions and exchanged views on the latest equipment and technologies in tumor treatment.

During the MDT Clinic session, the challenges were indeed formidable. Our interpreters faced tremendous uncertainty, as no patient information was provided in advance, and the patients appeared completely at random, making their conditions, ages, regional backgrounds, and cultures impossible to predict. However, this could not stop our determination to demonstrate professional excellence. With strong linguistic skills, precise mastery of a wide range of medical terminology, and keen insight into communication habits across different cultural backgrounds, our interpreters accurately conveyed the intentions of both doctors and patients in every conversation. Faced with medical imaging materials and complex case reports, they rapidly grasped the content and rendered it into accurate target-language translations, bridging the communication gap between both parties. This enabled the Indonesian team to fully appreciate the efficiency and professionalism of the MDT work carried out by the Jiangsu Province Hospital team.
